Gratitude in Everyday Life
I returned from Costa Rica in January 2013. My mom and I took a small plane between cities in the rainforest and cities along the coast. As we traveled in the air, I looked out over the clouds and said to my mom that when I die I am going to run and play on the clouds. She said that was a nice thought. I wondered then whether my mom imagined seeing her mom (my grandma) running through the clouds or playing tennis with her dad (my grandpa) who died thirty years before my grandma.
In the "what animal would you be" game, I always choose a bird. The species of bird changes. I like eagles, they mate for life and there is something romantic about an animal that spends its entire life with another. I like cormorants, a duck-like bird with heavy bones. Cormorants sit low in the water and are expert divers, making them above and below the sea birds. One of Darwin's finches would be nice. Ecuador is beautiful and the Galapagos is tranquil and peaceful. A bird. I would definitely choose to be a bird.

On Thanksgiving day, 2012, I walked out of my life. I spent just over two months as the observer of me. Compound that with staying with my parents and traveling with my mom. It was likely one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. Seldom do we ever take the time to really see what we want. To look at our mistakes, examine our relationships, beginning with the relationship one has with oneself.
I learned that I love the ocean, but the mountains are my home. I learned that I love my boyfriend more than I love anyone in the world. I learned that my dog is my best friend. I learned that how I look to the world has more to do with what I see in the mirror. I learned there are so many things to be grateful for and that I don't want to take anything for granted. I learned that things are just things and can never replace a warm smile, a home-cooked meal, or a beer with a friend.
I'm grateful to the people in my life, to my past and present clients. I am grateful for my dog. But I am most grateful that I can find gratitude in my life everyday.
